blood-vessel-branching Colin “Google” McDougall has a blog post from November in which he warns the reader / viewer that Google will make inbound links from social media sites irrelevant to search engine ranking.

Search engine robots normally view links to your website from outside it as a sign of popularity, which boosts your ranking in searches. But it is too easy to stuff social media sites with one’s own links–like voting too many times for oneself, as Colin notes.

A number of social media sites also discourage commercial content and favor social milling and friendship building. Of course, business is built on trust, and trust often begins with social interaction. Your friends may put links to your site on theirs, as Colin again points out.
